Ibiza JoySail 2026: Why Serious Sailing Is Moving Between Ibiza and Formentera

Ibiza is usually sold through noise.

That is only half the island.

The other Ibiza is more interesting: late season, cleaner light, owners returning after August, boats that are there to sail rather than to be photographed at anchor, and a stretch of water between Ibiza and Formentera that can still remind people why the Balearics matter beyond the restaurant list.

Ibiza JoySail 2026 has confirmed a fleet of 20 sailing superyachts for its sixth edition, taking place from September 17 to 20 and based at Marina Ibiza. The fleet will race in the waters between Ibiza and Formentera, with yachts ranging from 80 to 147 feet.

That makes the event more than a regatta.

It is a useful correction to the way many people misunderstand Ibiza.

Sailing changes the island

Motor yachts dominate the popular image of Ibiza.

The reasons are obvious: beach clubs, speed, tenders, parties, social visibility, Formentera day runs. But sailing yachts bring a different rhythm. They depend more visibly on wind, crew, timing and patience. They do not turn the sea into a road in quite the same way.

A sailing regatta changes the conversation.

It brings owners, crews and guests who understand boats as more than platforms. It makes the water active. It turns Ibiza and Formentera into a course, not only a backdrop.

The 2026 JoySail fleet includes returning entries such as Aurelius, Cervo, Gelliceaux, Karibu, Liberty Squared, Moat, Morgana and Nostromo, alongside debuting yachts including Bella, Fortissimo, Atalante, Inoui, Kalantis, Kiboko III, Mari Cha III, Ocho, Point Counter Point, Rose, Starfall and Win Win. Southern Wind is the best represented builder with seven yachts, followed by Nautor Swan with five.

That matters because this is not only a spectacle of size.

It is a concentration of serious sailing culture: Southern Wind, Swan, Vitters, Baltic, Pendennis, Oyster, Wally and others all in one field.

For a yacht owner, the company you race with matters almost as much as the course.

Cruising trim is the clever part

One of JoySail's strengths is that it embraces a Corinthian spirit, allowing owners and crews to compete while keeping yachts in standard cruising trim. Pressmare notes that this balance between racing projects and cruising yachts competing in original configuration has become one of the event's defining characteristics.

That is important.

A regatta can become too technical for the owner who simply wants to enjoy the boat. Or too social to matter to real sailors. JoySail sits between those extremes. It lets serious boats compete without asking every yacht to become a pure racing machine.

That balance suits Ibiza.
